We didn’t just take a cruise—we stitched together a journey.

Flight into Seattle, a night to settle in, then northbound by rail into Vancouver. And if I’m being honest, that train ride might’ve quietly stolen the whole show. Something about watching the coastline roll by at that pace—unrushed, unfiltered—it felt like the right way to arrive for Alaska. Like easing into a song instead of jumping straight to the chorus.

Vancouver itself was a mixed first impression. Beautiful city, no doubt, but you can’t ignore the visible homelessness issue. It’s there, and it’s noticeable. Not a dealbreaker—just part of the reality.

🚢 The Ship: Celebrity Solstice

We sailed the Celebrity Solstice with stops at:

  • Hubbard Glacier

  • Juneau

  • Ketchikan

  • Icy Strait Point

And Alaska?
Man… Alaska delivers.

There’s a scale to it that photos don’t quite capture. Hubbard Glacier alone feels less like a stop and more like a moment you sit with. You don’t rush it. You just take it in.

⚖️ The Comparison (Keeping It Fair)

I’m coming at this with three prior sailings on Carnival.

To be clear:

  • Those were Caribbean cruises

  • This is Alaska

👉 Not apples-to-apples.

But it’s the closest reference point I’ve got—and it helps frame what stood out.

🎭 Entertainment: Where Celebrity Pulls Ahead

This is where Celebrity really separated itself.

The shows felt like bigger productions—the kind you plan your night around.

We caught Rockumentary and another show (birthday-themed—name’s escaping me), and they were flat-out awesome.

  • The choreography

  • The live vocals

  • The overall production

👉 Honestly, it felt on par with the kind of shows you’d see in Vegas.

That’s something I didn’t expect—but it stuck.

🎹 The Social Spots That Worked

One area where the ship really clicked for us was around the Boulevard Lounge and nearby spaces.

It became a bit of a home base.

  • Dueling pianos in the Boulevard Lounge

  • Easy access to hangout space in The Parlor

It just worked as a place to land at night.

Quick reality check though:

  • One night, the female performer was absent

  • Final night, she didn’t sing

  • The one night they performed together?

👉 Really good

So the potential is absolutely there—it just wasn’t consistent every night.

🍽️ Specialty Dining (Where Things Recovered)

We did:

  • Murano

  • Sushi on Five

Both were enjoyable.

👉 Murano was the best meal of the entire cruise.

No hesitation.

For context, we’ve done Carnival’s Steakhouse and a few of their specialty spots.

And here’s the fair take:

  • Murano was the best single meal

  • But overall, Carnival’s specialty dining holds its own

👉 Closer than people might think.

🍽️ Complimentary Dining: Where Carnival Still Wins

This is an area that surprised me once I stepped back and thought about the full experience.

On paper, Celebrity feels more elevated.

But when it comes to everyday, included food options, Carnival has something that’s hard to beat:

  • Guy’s Burger Joint

  • Shaq’s Big Chicken

  • Grab-and-go options that are fast, consistent, and just… easy

👉 There’s something to be said for being able to walk up, grab something solid, and keep your day moving.

On Celebrity, outside of buffet and main dining, that same level of casual, dependable variety just didn’t hit the same.

So while Celebrity may feel more upscale overall:

Carnival has the edge in complimentary dining variety and convenience

🍽️ The Big Miss: Anytime Dining

This is where things got rough for us.

Celebrity’s Anytime Dining was, flat out, frustrating.

  • The app never really worked

  • We couldn’t reliably reserve times

  • Every night turned into:

    • Show up

    • Wait

    • Stand around

And the part that stuck:

We were rarely acknowledged in the no-reservation line

Not angry—just consistently overlooked.

Over a week, that starts to wear on you.

🤔 Carnival vs Celebrity (Dining Overall)

Putting it all together:

👉 Carnival takes the edge for us on dining overall

Not because it’s more upscale
Not because the food is dramatically better

But because:

  • Specialty dining holds up

  • Complimentary options are strong and easy

  • The system just… works

And when you’re on vacation, that consistency matters more than you expect.

🛏️ Cabins & Service

The cabins themselves?

Pretty standard. Clean, functional—nothing dramatically different.

But the difference shows up in service.

Our steward—Edwin—was fantastic.

  • Room serviced twice a day

  • Turn-down with chocolates

  • Always on point

👉 This is where Celebrity really shines.

That said—small thing, but real:

Both my wife and daughter missed the towel animals Carnival does.

It’s a small touch, but those things stick.

🎶 The Feel of the Trip

If I had to sum it up:

  • Alaska = unforgettable

  • The train ride in = a highlight

  • Entertainment = elevated

  • Specialty dining = strong

  • Social spaces = well done

  • Dining consistency = where things slipped

Celebrity does a lot right.

But when dinner becomes a nightly hurdle, it pulls you out of what’s otherwise a really strong experience.

🌄 Final Take

We loved Alaska. That part isn’t even a question.

And we’d absolutely do it again.

But next time, we go in with clearer expectations—especially around dining.

Because in a place like Alaska, you don’t need perfection.

You just need the ship to stay out of the way long enough for the destination to do what it does best.
